Syahrizal Koto

Born in Pariaman, West Sumatra, on 6 September 1960

  • Education
  • Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (ISI; Indonesia Institute of The Arts Yogyakarta)

He finished studying sculpture in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta) in 1991. His work received an award in the non - abstract category in Rancang Patung Lingkungan Citra Raya (Citra Raya Sclupture Design) competition in 1995, and he was one of three Prize winners in Landmark Ancol competition 2001 in Jakarta. He has held solo exhibitions in Sika Gallery, Ubud, Bali in 1997, Yogyakarta in 1998 and Jakarta in 2001. He now lives and works in Yogyakarta.

Syahrizal mostly uses bronze to show deformed shapes or excessive distortions in his works. He developed this style by starting with increasing levels of artistic association. An important factor to consider in viewing his sculptures is that the figures are often mutilated, stretched, bent, or have hollow spaces in them. This is due to influences from such things as ancient statues, ornamentation on antiques, and impressions of magic, which he feels towards objects and the works of other great sculptors in the world.

The artist captures natural exoticism and narratives of life in his own unique style of sculpture. Some of this abstract works echo anthropomorphic images, as their contours are closer to animal or human figures than to geometric forms. Their special attraction is attained through distortion, elongation and curvature together with rough and smooth surfaces achieved by chiselling, pinching, and applying things to the models that he shapes. Syahrizal does not make illusion appear in his sculptures. Instead, it is as if he wants to show off the classical enchantment of the physical importance of form, which can be seen in the materials, techniques, details, and basic non - artistic ideas that all become united in his works.
