I Wayan Sudarna Putra

Born in Ubud, Bali, on 15 April 1976

I Wayan Sudarna Putra was born in Ubud, Bali, on 15 April 1976. He studied art in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta) from 1994 to 2004. His work was among the ten best in the Philip Morris Indonesia Art Awards 1999. He has participated in many exhibitions in Java and Bali. Although primarily a painter, he also does sculpture and installation pieces. He now lives and works in Yogyakarta.

The artist has a playful spirit which is the moving force behind his artistic creativity, Inspiration, ideology and method. Sudarna present views of his perceptions and images of reality through parodies. He gives fresh meaning to common views by shifting the context or direction of logic so that they are twisted around. The absurdities of life are revealed through strange images which are humorous or puzzling, causing confusion between representation and references to reality. They often take on a sensitive and subversive character. This critical dimension is deep, sharp and stings by ridiculing the hierarchy  of  power, the hedonistic-bourgeoisie-materialistic way of life, and cultural norms and identity. One proudly bears the red and white Indonesia flag, while others stumble under the weight of an unknown object.

Sudarna's figures are realistic and imaginary, generally anonymous and stereotypical characters that seem to be caricatures. They behave, act and gesture in scenes taken from narratives or stories. He plays with images of darkness and light to cause dramatic tensions and nuances of tragedy behind humorous events. The strength of his works lies in their ability to awaken feelings that open new horizons of consciousness towards reality.
